Studies in Computational Intelligence English 2014 Wikipedia continues to be the most well-known on-line encyclopedia and receives the visits of millions of users on a daily basis. Its contents correspond to almost all the knowledge areas and are altruistically contributed by individuals and organizations. In addition, users are encouraged to add their own contributions according to the Wikipedia's own supporting paradigm. Its progression to a mass phenomenon has propitiated many studies and research initiatives. Therefore, topics such as the quality of the published contents or the authoring of its contributions have been widely developed. However, very few attention has been paid to the behavioral aspects characterizing the interaction between Wikipedia and its users. Henceforth, this chapter aims to determine the habits exhibited by users when browsing the Wikipedia pages. Particularly, we will focus on visits and contributions, as they constitute the two most common forms of interaction. Our study is based on a sample of the requests submitted to Wikipedia, and its results are twofold: on the one hand, it provides different metrics concerning users' behavior and, on the other, presents particular comparisons among different Wikipedia editions. 0 0

KEOD 2012 - Proceedings of the International Conference on Knowledge Engineering and Ontology Development English 2012 This paper aims to analyze how the most requested and contributed contents in Wikipedia may significantly vary depending on the considered edition. The on-line Encyclopedia has become a prolific research topic, mainly in aspects related to the assessment of its contents and in its evolution forecasting. However, very little effort has been devoted to deal with the kind of use given to Wikipedia by its visitors, either occasional or subscribers. Thus, our work aims to explore the utilization made of Wikipedia through a classification of the most requested and contributed contents in some of its editions. This way, we will be in position of determining which type of contents attracts the highest numbers of visits and contributions in these editions and which can be a good indicator of the use given to them by their respective community of users. Apart from the subsequent comparison purposes, such examination may reveal interesting topics such as the transmission of tendencies over the different Wikipedia editions, as well as particular user patterns exhibited by the corresponding communities of users. 0 0

KDIR 2012 - Proceedings of the International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Information Retrieval English 2012 Wikipedia continues to provide the community with a vast collection of articles that cover almost all the different areas of knowledge. The on-line encyclopedia is built upon altruistic contributions from individuals and organizations, which constitutes an absolutely new approach in knowledge compilation and distribution. The progression ofWikipedia to a mass phenomenon has promoted several initiatives devoted to deal with different issues concerning it, specially the quality of its contents and the authoring of its contributions. However, very few attention has been paid to aspects related to users' attitudes and behavior when browsing the information it offers. For this reason, this paper aims to find patterns that can describe how users interact and behave when visiting the Wikipedia's pages. We will consider the two most common forms of interaction between Wikipedia and its users: visits and contributions (edits). From these observations we will be used obtain different metrics, such as the degree of participation or the reluctance exhibited by users which, in addition, will be used to perform a comparison amongst the different Wikipedia editions. Our study is based on a sample of the requests that users submit to Wikipedia, which we receive in the form of log lines. Its results can help to better understand the nature of the relationship between Wikipedia and its users, and to properly characterize the different interactions between them. Copyright 0 0

ICSOFT English 2011 This paper presents a quantitative examination of the impact of the presentation of featured articles as quality content in the main page of several Wikipedia editions. Moreover, the paper also presents the analysis performed to determine the number of visits received by the articles promoted to the featured status. We have analyzed the visits not only in the month when articles awarded the promotion or were included in the main page, but also in the previous and following ones. The main aim for this is to assess the attention attracted by the featured content and the different dynamics exhibited by each community of users in respect to the promotion process. The main results of this paper are twofold: it shows how to extract relevant information related to the use of Wikipedia, which is an emerging research topic, and it analyzes whether the featured articles mechanism achieve to attract more attention. 3 0

KEOD English 2010 This paper presents an empirical study on the impact of featured articles on the attention that Wikipedia’s articles attract, and how this behavior differs in different editions of Wikipedia. The study is based on the analysis of the log lines registered by the Wikimedia Foundation Squid servers after having sent the appropriate content in response to the corresponding request submitted by any Wikipedia user. The analysis has been conducted regarding the six most visited editions of the Wikipedia and has involved more than 4,100 million log lines corresponding to the traffic of September, October and November 2009. The methodology of work has mainly consisted on the parsing of the requests sent by the users and on their subsequent filtering according to the study directives. Relevant information fields has been finally stored in a database for persistence and further characterization. The main results of this paper are twofold: it shows how to use the the traffic log to extract information about the use of Wikipedia, which is a novel research approach without precedences in the research community, and it analyzes whether the featured articles mechanism achieve to attract more attention or not. 6 0
