Abstract "Sustainable development is a pattern of r"Sustainable development is a pattern of resource use that aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for future generations." -(source: Wikipedia) A sustainable building, or green building is an outcome of a design which focuses on increasing the efficiency of resource use - energy, water, and materials - while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment during the building's lifecycle, through better location, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal. This study is aimed at understanding the green building concepts, rating of green buildings and making a comparison between green buildings and conventional buildings. It also aims at reducing the energy consumption of non-renewable resources, through various mechanical engineering aspects like HVAC, electrical lighting, plumbing etc. This is about how to minimize environmental degradation caused by building practices; in particular, understanding green practices opted in two green buildings- CII Hyderabad (first platinum rated green building in India) and GRUNDFOS Chennai (gold rated green building). The OVERALL GOAL of this paper is learning how to deliver Planet Earth to the next generation so that it will be a cleaner and more energizing place than the planet we inherited. © 2011 CAFET-INNOVA TECHNICAL SOCIETY.
