|A case study of contributor behavior in Q&A site and tags: The importance of prominent profiles in community productivity||Furtado A.
|Journal of the Brazilian Computer Society||2014||Background: Question-and-answer (Q&A) sites have shown to be a valuable resource for helping people to solve their everyday problems. These sites currently enable a large number of contributors to exchange expertise by different ways (creating questions, answers or comments, and voting in these), and it is noticeable that they contribute in diverse amounts and create content of varying quality. Methods: Concerned with diversity of behaviors, this paper advances present knowledge about Q&A sites by performing a cluster analysis with a multifaceted view of contributors that account for their motivations and abilities to identify the most common behavioral profiles in these sites. Results: By examining all contributors' activity from a large site named Super User, we unveil nine behavioral profiles that group users according to the quality and quantity of their contributions. Based on these profiles, we analyze the community composition and the importance of each profile in the site's productivity. Moreover, we also investigate seven tag communities from Super User aiming to experiment with the generality of our results. In this context, the same nine profiles were found, and it was also observed that there is a remarkable similarity between the composition and productivity of the communities defined by the seven tags and the site itself. Conclusions: The profiles uncovered enhance the overall understanding of how Q&A sites work and knowing these profiles can support the site's management. Furthermore, an analysis of particularities in the tag communities comparison relates the variation in behavior to the typical behavior of each tag community studied, what also draws implications for creating administrative strategies. © 2014 Furtado; licensee Springer.||0||0|
|Searching for the goldilocks zone: Trade-offs in managing online volunteer groups||Wang L.S.
|English||2012||Dedicated and productive members who actively contribute to community efforts are crucial to the success of online volunteer groups such as Wikipedia. What predicts member productivity? Do productive members stay longer? How does involvement in multiple projects affect member contribution to the community? In this paper, we analyze data from 648 WikiProjects to address these questions. Our results reveal two critical trade-offs in managing online volunteer groups. First, factors that increase member productivity, measured by the number of edits on Wikipedia articles, also increase likelihood of withdrawal from contributing, perhaps due to feelings of mission accomplished or burnout. Second, individual membership in multiple projects has mixed effects. It decreases the amount of work editors contribute to both the individual projects and Wikipedia as a whole. It increases withdrawal for each individual project yet reduces withdrawal from Wikipedia. We discuss how our findings expand existing theories to fit the online context and inform the design of new tools to improve online volunteer work.||0||0|
|Don't bite the newbies: how reverts affect the quantity and quality of Wikipedia work||Aaron Halfaker
|WikiSym||English||2011||Reverts are important to maintaining the quality of Wikipedia. They fix mistakes, repair vandalism, and help enforce policy. However, reverts can also be damaging, especially to the aspiring editor whose work they destroy. In this research we analyze 400,000 Wikipedia revisions to understand the effect that reverts had on editors. We seek to understand the extent to which they demotivate users, reducing the workforce of contributors, versus the extent to which they help users improve as encyclopedia editors. Overall we find that reverts are powerfully demotivating, but that their net influence is that more quality work is done in Wikipedia as a result of reverts than is lost by chasing editors away. However, we identify key conditions – most specifically new editors being reverted by much more experienced editors – under which reverts are particularly damaging. We propose that reducing the damage from reverts might be one effective path for Wikipedia to solve the newcomer retention problem.||0||2|

The Active project addresses this challenge through an integrated knowledge management workspace that reduces information overload by significantly improving the mechanisms for creating, managing, and using information. The project's approach follows three themes: sharing information through tagging, wikis, and ontologies; prioritizing information delivery by understanding users' current-task context; and leveraging informal processes that are learned from user behavior.||0||0|
|The effects of diversity on group productivity and member withdrawal in online volunteer groups||Jilin Chen
|Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems - Proceedings||English||2010||The "wisdom of crowds" argument emphasizes the importance of diversity in online collaborations, such as open source projects and Wikipedia. However, decades of research on diversity in offline work groups have painted an inconclusive picture. On the one hand, the broader range of insights from a diverse group can lead to improved outcomes. On the other hand, individual differences can lead to conflict and diminished performance. In this paper, we examine the effects of group diversity on the amount of work accomplished and on member withdrawal behaviors in the context of WikiProjects. We find that increased diversity in experience with Wikipedia increases group productivity and decreases member withdrawal - up to a point. Beyond that point, group productivity remains high, but members are more likely to withdraw. Strikingly, no such diminishing returns were observed for differences in member interest, which increases productivity and decreases member withdrawal in a linear fashion. Our results suggest that the low visibility of individual differences in online groups may allow them to harvest more of the benefits of diversity while bearing less of the cost. We discuss how our findings can inform further research of online collaboration.||0||0|
|The effects of open innovation on collaboration & knowledge sharing in student design teams||Koch M.D.
|Proceedings of the ASME Design Engineering Technical Conference||English||2010||As the need to innovate more creatively and effectively becomes increasingly apparent in engineering design, powerful open design tools and practices have emerged that are allowing organizations and firms to tap an already vast pool of skills, knowledge and intellect to solve complex design problems. The need for engineering design educators to bring these new trends into the classroom continues to grow as the industry for which students are being prepared begins to revamp its design strategies and practices in the pursuit of more openly accessible information infrastructures. By conducting an experimental study of over 25 student design groups in an undergraduate design engineering class, our team was able to gauge the relevance and utility of collaboration and knowledge sharing between and within design groups. Specifically, issues and opportunities were identified to help bring engineering and design education in line with the increasingly networked and distributed professional engineering environment that students will be enter upon graduation. While innovations in new service business and delivery models are keys to margin growth, service quality is ever more important to protect the client base. This paper reports end-to-end current practices in the enterprise hosting business, which is by far the largest revenue source in the overall IT services industry. The current preeminent problem is how data centers can be consolidated to host large numbers of servers economically. It is found that the scalability challenge is primarily a governance bottleneck. Research focus has been placed on streamlining the on-boarding processes with visual accountability of the delivery roles and collaboration with clients. It is shown how Web 2.0 technologies can be utilized in a new governance model for both productivity and quality improvements.||0||0|

|Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering||English||2004||The software development process in Green Bank is managed in six-week development cycles, where two cycles fall within one quarter. Each cycle, a Plan of Record is devised which outlines the team's commitments, deliverables, technical leads and scientific sponsors. To be productive and efficient, the team must not only be able to track its progress towards meeting commitments, but also to communicate and circulate the information that will help it meet its goals effectively. In the early summer of 2003, the Software Development Division installed a wiki web site using the TWiki product to improve the effectiveness of the team. Wiki sites contain web pages that are maintainable using a web interface by anyone who becomes a registered user of the site. Because the site naturally supports group involvement, the Plan of Record on the wiki now serves as the central dashboard for project tracking each development cycle. As an example of how the wiki improves productivity, software documentation is now tracked as evidence of the software deliverable. Written status reports are thus not required when the Plan of Record and associated wiki pages are kept up to date. The wiki approach has been quite successful in Green Bank for document management as well as software development management, and has rapidly extended beyond the bounds of the software development group for information management.||0||0|
