It is well understood that semantic associations from text can be discerned by observing patterns of co-occurrences of terms. However, much of the work in this direction has been piecemeal, addressing specific kinds of semantic associations. In this work, we propose a generic framework, using which several kinds of semantic associations can be mined. The framework comprises a co-occurrence graph of terms, along with a set of graph operators. A methodology for using this framework is also proposed, where the properties of a given semantic association can be hypothesized and tested over the framework. To show the generic nature of the proposed model, four different semantic associations are mined over a corpus comprising of Wikipedia articles. |Cybernetics and Systems||English||2014||In our work, we review and empirically evaluate five different raw methods of text representation that allow automatic processing of Wikipedia articles. The main contribution of the article - evaluation of approaches to text representation for machine learning tasks - indicates that the text representation is fundamental for achieving good categorization results. The analysis of the representation methods creates a baseline that cannot be compensated for even by sophisticated machine learning algorithms. It confirms the thesis that proper data representation is a prerequisite for achieving high-quality results of data analysis. Evaluation of the text representations was performed within the Wikipedia repository by examination of classification parameters observed during automatic reconstruction of human-made categories. For that purpose, we use a classifier based on a support vector machines method, extended with multilabel and multiclass functionalities. During classifier construction we observed parameters such as learning time, representation size, and classification quality that allow us to draw conclusions about text representations. For the experiments presented in the article, we use data sets created from Wikipedia dumps. We describe our software, called Matrixu, which allows a user to build computational representations of Wikipedia articles. The software is the second contribution of our research, because it is a universal tool for converting Wikipedia from a human-readable form to a form that can be processed by a machine. Results generated using Matrixu can be used in a wide range of applications that involve usage of Wikipedia data.||0||0|

|Learning Organization||English||2014||Purpose: The aim of this paper is to examine the subject area of implementing Web 2.0 tools in organisations to identify from the literature common issues that must be addressed to assist organisations in their approach towards introducing Web 2.0 tools in their workplace. Based on the findings of the literature a Web 2.0 tools implementation model is presented. Design/methodology/approach: A general scoping review of the literature will be conducted to identify potential issues that might impact on the implementation of Web 2.0 tools in organisations to provide an overview of examples of empirical evidence that exists in this subject area with a view to examining how to advance this particular field of research. Findings: The findings of the scoping literature review indicate that while certain conceptual models and frameworks exist on how to implement Web 2.0 tools in organisations there is a lack of evidence to suggest that they have been empirically tested. The paper also notes that though organisations are unique, based on the literature common features can be found regarding "best practice" on how to introduce Web 2.0 tools in organisations. Research limitations/implications: This paper does not present any findings based on an empirical study involving the implementation of Web 2.0 tools in organisations. The paper does however provide scope for both academic and management practitioners to adopt and test the models and frameworks identified in the literature review when implementing Web 2.0 tools in their organisations. Originality/value: The contribution to knowledge that this paper provides is that it reviews an area where there is a lack of empirical evidence, namely, in the approaches that organisations can adopt when implementing Web 2.0 tools. Based on the findings from the literature and through the creation of a Web 2.0 tools implementation model, this paper provides practical guidance to management practitioners who might find introducing Web 2.0 tools into the workplace a challenge.||0||0|

Developing an online manual housed on a wiki that could be used and contributed to by staff on all three campuses was essential to this goal. Multi-campus meetings and online discussions are additional methods we use to promote collaboration. This article will include a literature review of collaboration and wikis along with methods the Troy University Libraries Technical Services departments are using to establish communication across the campuses.||0||0|

|FEBS Journal||English||2013||Tankyrase 1 and tankyrase 2 are poly(ADP-ribosyl)ases that are distinguishable from other members of the enzyme family by the structural features of the catalytic domain, and the presence of a sterile α-motif multimerization domain and an ankyrin repeat protein-interaction domain. Tankyrases are implicated in a multitude of cellular functions, including telomere homeostasis, mitotic spindle formation, vesicle transport linked to glucose metabolism, Wnt-β-catenin signaling, and viral replication. In these processes, tankyrases interact with target proteins, catalyze poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation, and regulate protein interactions and stability. The proposed roles of tankyrases in disease-relevant cellular processes have made them attractive drug targets. Recently, several inhibitors have been identified. The selectivity and potency of these small molecules can be rationalized by how they fit within the NAD+-binding groove of the catalytic domain. Some molecules bind to the nicotinamide subsite, such as generic diphtheria toxin-like ADP-ribosyltransferase inhibitors, whereas others bind to a distinct adenosine subsite that diverges from other diphtheria toxin-like ADP-ribosyltransferases and confers specificity. A highly potent dual-site inhibitor is also available. Within the last few years, tankyrase inhibitors have proved to be useful chemical probes and potential lead compounds, especially for specific cancers. This review describes the biochemical and cellular functions of the tankyrase subfamily of human ADP-ribosyltransferases. Tankyrases use NAD+ as a substrate to covalently modify acceptor proteins leading to dissociation of macromolecular complexes and protein degradation. Existing tankyrase inhibitors target the nicotinamide and/or the adenine pocket of the donor NAD+-binding cleft of the catalytic domain.||0||0|

|Public Historian||English||2013||The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History, first published in 1987 and then placed online in 1998, is recognized as the progenitor of the modern, urban encyclopedia and a model of shared academic and vernacular authority. Today Wikipedia challenges it and similar scholarly products with its reliance on universal authority, its huge scope of entries, and its ability to keep current. This article suggests that vetted urban encyclopedias need to revisit their roots as community enterprises and reimagine and reengage those connections in order to allow their vetted content to remain competitive with Wikipedia and other open-source online resources. © 2013 by The Regents of the University of California and the National Council on Public History. |Use of Web 2.0 technologies in K-12 and higher education: The search for evidence-based practice||Hew K.F.
|Educational Research Review||English||2013||Evidence-based practice in education entails making pedagogical decisions that are informed by relevant empirical research evidence. The main purpose of this paper is to discuss evidence-based pedagogical approaches related to the use of Web 2.0 technologies in both K-12 and higher education settings. The use of such evidence-based practice would be useful to educators interested in fostering student learning through Web 2.0 tools. A comprehensive literature search across the Academic Search Premier, Education Research Complete, ERIC, and PsycINFO databases was conducted. Empirical studies were included for review if they specifically examined the impact of Web 2.0 technologies on student learning. Articles that merely described anecdotal studies such as student perception or feeling toward learning using Web 2.0, or studies that relied on student self-report data such as student questionnaire survey and interview were excluded. Overall, the results of our review suggested that actual evidence regarding the impact of Web 2.0 technologies on student learning is as yet fairly weak. Nevertheless, the use of Web 2.0 technologies appears to have a general positive impact on student learning. None of the studies reported a detrimental or inferior effect on learning. The positive effects are not necessarily attributed to the technologies per se but to how the technologies are used, and how one conceptualizes learning. It may be tentatively concluded that a dialogic, constructionist, or co-constructive pedagogy supported by activities such as Socratic questioning, peer review and self-reflection appeared to increase student achievement in blog-, wiki-, and 3-D immersive virtual world environments, while a transmissive pedagogy supported by review activities appeared to enhance student learning using podcast.||0||0|

|Library Review||English||2013||Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the growth and development of periodical literature on Web 2.0 technologies and their other fields. Design/methodology/approach: Bibliographic data of the articles published in the 13 leading peer-reviewed journals are obtained from the Emerald database (www.emeraldinsight.com) directly using such keywords as "Web 2.0", "blogs", "wikis", "RSS", "social networking sites", "podcasts", "Mashup", and multimedia sharing tools, i.e. YouTube and Flickr. The bibliographical surrogates such as author, title, subtitle, source, issue, volume, pages, etc. were recorded in MS-Excel (2010) sheet for the analysis and interpretation of data. A bibliography of selected articles is provided. Findings: The study found 206 research articles on the subject published in 13 leading library and information science journals of Emerald for period 2007-2011. Further, the study found that 2009 was the most productive year with 69 articles. The study observed Online Information Review published 49 articles, and hence can be considered the core journal on the topic. Mike Thelwall from the UK was found to be the most prolific author, having authored or co-authored five articles. Research limitations/implications: The study was based on 206 research articles published during the years 2007-2011. The study was restricted to this period because the Web 2.0 concept was originated during 2004-2005 and the undertaken period has sufficient published literature on the topic. Originality/value: The paper provides reliable and authentic information on the subject. This is the first study on this topic.||0||0|

|International Journal of the History of Sport||English||2013||Academic responses to Wikipedia since its inception in 2001 have shifted from scepticism and hostility to serious critique. Wikipedia is a project driven by a community of amateur, and sometimes professional, scholars and it is this community-and associated rules and practices-that shapes the site's publicly viewable content. Despite the centrality of egalitarianism and communal wisdom to the Wikipedian ethos, the encyclopaedia is not filled equitably with historical knowledge or topics. This article addresses the role of Wikipedia in the production of knowledge in a sport history context. An analysis of 115 Wikipedia articles written about notable Australian sportspeople revealed a disproportionately large group of high-quality cricket biographies. Further investigation revealed that a small group of Wikipedians were responsible for writing these articles. The work of this community of practice is indicative of the influence that dedicated special interest groups can have over the production of knowledge on Wikipedia and raises broader questions about the production of knowledge in sport history.||0||0|

Wikis have been referred to as next generation KMS, providing an alternative to traditional knowledge management systems by addressing many of their limitations. However, research shows that there are cases where wikis have failed to achieve this potential. Further research on the range of issues and challenges surrounding the implementation of wikis in the corporate environment is required in order to enable organizations manage them more effectively and reap maximum benefits. Design/methodology/approach: This paper begins by providing a review of previously published empirical studies on wiki deployment in organizations. The disparate discussions are then synthesised by identifying the major issues and challenges in wiki implementation. Findings: Six major issues and challenges are identified including lack of a clear purpose for the wiki, wiki usability, integrating wikis into established work practices, social issues, role of management and organizational culture that supports knowledge sharing and collaboration. Originality/value: It is posited that in order for organizations to successfully implement wikis, it is necessary to first understand the issues and challenges surrounding wiki implementation. This paper contributes to practice by identifying the key issues and challenges in the implementation of wikis and suggesting strategies for using wikis to manage knowledge effectively. Building on this review, we critically analyse the findings and propose a model for the implementation of wikis which addresses these issues and identifies research areas that further need to be investigated.||0||0|

La primera edición de WikiSym, un simposio sobre wikis, se celebró en 2005 y desde entonces han aparecido multitud de congresos, workshops, conferencias y competiciones en este área. El estudio de los wikis es un campo emergente y prolífico.
Ha habido varios intentos, aunque con escaso éxito, de recopilar toda la literatura sobre wikis. Unas veces el enfoque o la herramienta utilizada eran limitados, otras debido a las dimensiones de la tarea el proyecto era abandonado y al poco tiempo los metadatos bibliográficos se perdían. En este trabajo presentamos WikiPapers, un proyecto colaborativo para recopilar toda la literatura sobre wikis. Se hace uso de MediaWiki y su extensión semántica, ambos conocidos por los investigadores de este campo. Hasta noviembre de 2012 se han recopilado más de 1.700 publicaciones y sus metadatos, además de documentación sobre herramientas y datasets relacionados. Los metadatos son exportables en los formatos BibTeX, RDF, CSV y JSON. Los historiales completos del wiki están disponibles para descargar y facilitar su preservación. El proyecto está abierto a la participación de todo el mundo.El resto del trabajo se divide de la siguiente manera. En la sección 2 motivamos este trabajo haciendo un repaso a los distintos enfoques utilizados hasta ahora para recopilar toda la literatura sobre wikis, incidiendo en sus ventajas e inconvenientes. En la sección 3 detallamos los objetivos. En la sección 4 definimos algunos términos que servirán para comprender mejor el contenido. En la sección 5 presentamos WikiPapers, cómo funciona y qué pasos se han dado. En la sección 6 hacemos un estado del arte empleando WikiPapers. En la sección 7 repasamos las cuestiones que a día de hoy siguen abiertas o que han tenido poca atención hasta ahora. Finalmente, en la sección 8, terminamos con unas conclusiones y trabajo futuro.

|A video recording and viewing protocol for student group presentations: Assisting self-assessment through a Wiki environment||Barry S.||Group experience
|Computers and Education||English||2012||The purpose of this research was to firstly develop a protocol for video recording student group oral presentations, for later viewing and self-assessment by student group members. Secondly, evaluations of students' experiences of this process were undertaken to determine if this self-assessment method was a positive experience for them in gaining insights into the quality of their group's presentation. Participants were students undertaking a first year course in a bachelor of business degree within an Australian university. Students were surveyed twice, once prior to group formation to determine their previous oral group presentation experiences and then after viewing their presentations. Data from survey items assessing students' perspectives on the utility of viewing their video presentations, within their group Wikis, revealed that watching the video of their group presentation was an effective method of feedback and could improve both group and individual performance in the future. Further, content analysis of open ended survey questions and focus groups identified that students were highly engaged in the activity and after reviewing and reflecting on their video recording had deeper insights and raised awarenesses of making group presentations. Not so, however, in the case of Wikipedia, in which the proposal to introduce a system of review for new edits (in order to counter vandalism) led to heated discussions. This debate is analysed, and arguments of both supporters and opponents (of English, German and French tongue) are extracted from Wikipedian archives. In order to better understand this division of the minds, an analogy is drawn with theories of bureaucracy as developed for real-life organizations. From these it transpires that bureaucratic rules may be perceived as springing from either a control logic or an enabling logic. In Wikipedia, then, both perceptions were at work, depending on the underlying views of participants. Wikipedians either rejected the proposed scheme (because it is antithetical to their conception of Wikipedia as a community) or endorsed it (because it is consonant with their conception of Wikipedia as an organization with clearly defined boundaries). Allowing language to evolve in use is a powerful means of managing the trade-off curve for a growing space of products. Larry Page and Sergei Brin have developed PageRank algorithm, which aggregates the local knowledge implicit in the network of references between pages. PageRank can adapt to almost unlimited changes in the content and uses of the Web without needing to change the core algorithm at all. Yelp is an online service that aggregates, curates, and helps users search reviews of local businesses. The Internet has catalyzed the emergence of very large open working groups, such as the Linux development community, the Wikipedia authoring community, and various fan and support groups.||0||0|

In this paper, we present a semantic wiki, named DartWiki, to build ontology-based digital encyclopedia for the biomedicine domain. DartWiki provides a Web-based interface for accessing knowledge artifacts in both per-artifact and per-concept mode. In the per-artifact mode, users can access these artifacts, and annotate them in both short texts and logical statements in terms of domain ontologies. In the concept-based mode, users can navigate a graph of concepts, and review and edit the synthesized page about a selected concept, which contains meaningful information about the concept, and also its related concepts and artifacts. Smooth transitions between the two modes are achieved through semantic links. As a use case of the DartWiki, we provide an open platform for the management and maintenance of digital artifacts in Integrated Medicine. This system provides medical practitioners with relevant and trustworthy knowledge artifacts, and also means to input artifacts, to clarify their meaning, and to check and improve their quality, which encourages the inclusion and participation of users, and effectively creates an online community around knowledge sharing.||0||0|

|Text and Talk||English||2012||This paper examines the editorial discussion of Wikipedia's policy of "Neutral Point of View" during the collaborative authorship of the entry for Che Guevara. Such data provide a rare source of unprompted lay metalanguage on the relationship between the lexicogrammatical form of a text and its evaluative orientation and make possible an inductive approach to exploring this longstanding issue in critical linguistics inquiry. The paper illustrates this inductive approach in selecting a stretch of text identified by the editors themselves as problematic and relating their metalinguistic commentaries to the lexicogrammatical features of both the original text and the variations proposed. However, recognizing that naturally occurring metalanguage is itself situated within its own social practice, the paper considers ways in which the editors' readings are a function of their role as Wikipedia "prosumers" and goes on to discuss the need to theorize specific reader types within critical linguistic approaches to discourse analysis.||0||0|

The Dental Procedure Education System (DPES) is a new web application that uses SharePoint to combine online collaborative authoring characteristic of wiki spaces with instructional video documentaries. Harnessing the wiki's versatility, DPES offers faculty members an avenue to develop an authoritative source of information for both students, through DPES Pro, and the public at large, through DPES Public. Principles of cognitive theory of multimedia learning, constructivist theory, and collaborative writing were employed in the development of DPES. An authoring protocol, with a clearly defined sequence of steps, was established in order to keep the production of the DPES procedures consistent and predictable. Initial, anecdotal user reports indicate that DPES is well received among dental students and faculty members. Expected outcomes and benefits of DPES use are discussed, and directions for research are proposed.||0||0|

Content curation communities are large-scale crowdsourcing endeavors that aim to curate existing content into a single repository, making these communities different from content creation communities such as Wikipedia. In this article, we define content curation communities and provide examples of this increasingly important genre. We then follow by presenting EOL, a compelling example of a content curation community, and describe a case study of EOL based on analysis of interviews, online discussions, and survey data. Our findings are characterized into two broad categories: information integration and social integration. Information integration challenges at EOL include the need to (a) accommodate and validate multiple sources and (b) integrate traditional peer reviewed sources with user-generated, nonpeer-reviewed content. Social integration challenges at EOL include the need to (a) establish the credibility of open-access resources within the scientific community and (b) facilitate collaboration between experts and novices. After identifying the challenges, we discuss the potential strategies EOL and other content curation communities can use to address them, and provide technical, content, and social design recommendations for overcoming them.||0||0|

It also aims to assess drivers identified a decade ago on university futures. Design/methodology/approach: The paper reviews drivers, trends and scenarios. Findings: The paper finds first, globalization will likely continue but innovation will move to Chindia. Second, democratization has resulted by not as imagined a decade ago, rather, peer-to-peer or web 2.0 has changed the game. Three new scenarios are articulated: Wikipedia university; core-periphery reversed and incremental managerialism. Bliss for all remains an outlier. Practical implications: Asian-Pacific universities instead of adopting the used future of the core will find it wiser to innovate and create new visions as well as to develop new global ranking systems. Social implications: Traditional universities are the likely dinosaurs unable to thrive in a dramatically changing world. Increasing inequity in traditional western universities will likely further devalue higher education. New models of inclusion are required. |Online Information Review||English||2012||Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the extent to which Web 2.0 applications are prevalent in government web sites, the ways in which Web 2.0 applications have been used in government web sites, as well as whether the presence of Web 2.0 applications correlates with the perceived quality of government web sites. Design/methodology/approach - Divided equally between developing and advanced economies, a total of 200 government web sites were analysed using content analysis and multiple regression analysis. Findings - The prevalence of seven Web 2.0 applications in descending order was: RSS, multimedia sharing services, blogs, forums, social tagging services, social networking services and wikis. More web sites in advanced countries include Web 2.0 applications than those in developing countries. The presence of Web 2.0 applications was found to have a correlation with the overall web site quality, and in particular, service quality. Research limitations/implications - This paper only covers government web sites in English. Emerging genres of Web 2.0 applications such as mashups and virtual worlds have not been included. Moreover the data were drawn solely from the public domain. Practical implications - Decision makers and e-government web developers may benchmark their own efforts in deploying Web 2.0 applications against this study. The numerous exemplars cited here serve as a springboard to generate more ideas on how Web 2.0 applications could be used and harnessed to improve the overall quality of government web sites. We describe an improved technique for slide transition detection in video-based/screen-grabbed lecture recordings when the object-based representation is not available. Our experiments demonstrate the accuracy of this new technique. The idea is to take profit of category graph of Wikipedia starting with a set of categories that we associate with the domain. After obtaining the full set of categories belonging to the selected domain, the collection of corresponding pages is extracted, using some constraints. The set of titles of recovered pages and categories is selected as initial domain term vocabulary. The results show that this resource may be used for this task overcoming some of the limitations of alternative knowledge sources. Design/methodology/approach: The era of social media and web 2.0 has enabled a bottom-up collaborative approach and new ways to publish work on the web, promoted by tools such as YouTube video service. In this spirit a knowledge management course was designed aiming to facilitate university students to compose videos on different difficult concepts in the theory part of the course by searching for explanations on the web and by creating a Windows Media Player video focusing on the self-defined problems. The videos created by the students were published on a wiki (Wetpaint) and the students were encouraged to actively share knowledge and learn from one another by familiarising themselves with the videos of the other students. In order to utilise cognitive and social constructivism, as well as problem-based learning, the principles of the Jigsaw method were used to enable different students to create videos on different themes. Findings: Based on the authors' experiences it is suggested that curriculum and syllabus planning should be transformed toward a more student-centred approach. This is the most natural in the context of knowledge management, which emphasizes the meaning of participation and knowledge sharing. The social constructivist learning theory emphasizes the meaning of interaction in successful learning. By publishing videos created by the students themselves, by commenting on videos created by other students and by reading comments expressed by others the approach proved to be beneficial for learning in many ways. Research limitations/implications: The research limitation lies in the differences of quality, format and sizes of these videos produced and the efforts and time requirements for editing and use. Practical implications: The present finding and report implies more of these resources could be generated by students in other courses in other study areas encouraging use of these types of resources, engaging students with the curriculum, and encouraging interaction amongst students promoting deeper understanding, more positive learning experiences and the generation of curriculum teaching materials by students for class work, making learning more student focused. This work is focused on the study of signals extracted from the content of documents at different points in time for the purpose of weighting individual terms in a document. The basic idea behind our proposals is that terms that have existed for a longer time in a document should have a greater weight. We propose 4 term weighting functions that use each document's history to estimate a current term score. To evaluate this thesis, we conduct 3 independent experiments using a collection of documents sampled from Wikipedia. In the first experiment, we use data from Wikipedia to judge each set of terms. In a second experiment, we use an external collection of tags from a popular social bookmarking service as a gold standard. In the third experiment, we crowdsource user judgments to collect feedback on term preference. Across all experiments results consistently support our thesis. We show that temporally aware measures, specifically the proposed revision term frequency and revision term frequency span, outperform a term-weighting measure based on raw term frequency alone.||0||0|

Since April 2004, editors have formed a group called WikiProject Medicine to coordinate and discuss the English-language Wikipedia's medical content. This paper, written by members of the WikiProject Medicine, discusses the intricacies, strengths, and weaknesses of Wikipedia as a source of health information and compares it with other medical wikis. Medical professionals, their societies, patient groups, and institutions can help improve Wikipedia's health-related entries. Several examples of partnerships already show that there is enthusiasm to strengthen Wikipedia's biomedical content. Given its unique global reach, we believe its possibilities for use as a tool for worldwide health promotion are underestimated. This paper presents a case study which details the experiences of the author in developing what began as a simple Wiki platform into a highly functional classroom management system. The Wiki was developed using open source software acquired in 2002 and then customized and reprogrammed by the author and used in various higher education classroom settings from 2004 to 2009. The Wiki provides a central repository for all class activity and allows both the instructor and the student to add content to the class web site. The web site provides an orderly, streamlined presentation of course content that is appropriate for the course, an approach markedly different from that of a generically structured course management system such as BlackBoard, Sakai, or Moodle. The paper will first provide a historical perspective on the use of Wikis and other collaboration and knowledge aggregation software in the classroom, and then provide detail on the features and functions of the modified Wiki. Finally, analysis of student usage of the Wiki and the results of a student survey about the Wiki web site will be reviewed and discussed. The fundamental objective for modern university libraries is to create interfaces with the global knowledge system, tailor-made to the individual profile and needs of each university, department, researcher, and student. University libraries must support and use collaborative working and learning spaces and must be able to filter information and make it context relevant and reliant. Wikipedia is a good example of collaborative work between non-professionals, non-specialists, nonscientific volunteers with a fine result. Filtering information and making it context relevant and reliant are of very high importance, not only to the students and their education processes but also in connection with science and the scientific processes at the university.||0||0|

The disaster caused numerous deaths, injuries, refugees and property loss at Louisiana, Missippi, and New Orleans. Cell phones, towers, and radio antennas failed to communicate due to their dependence on aboveground structures. Websites provided by service providers such as Internet Archive, Wikipedia, WEB Triad are useful search tools for Hurricane Katrina information. These provide links to many relief agencies across the country, employment sections, missing persons, housing, and generate relief outside the disaster area. Bloggers organize and discuss emergency preparedness and groundwork in advance. It is recommended that a robust communication system be developed for the emergencies to avoid the negative impact of the natural disasters.||0||0|

Personal information management (PIM) plays both instrumental and symbolic roles, enhancing the impressions by user performance. PIM is a private activity where users often create personal information with sharing in mind. When personal information is shared, it produces tensions between the ends for which it is shared and the not-necessarily desirable symbolic inferences it may support. Group information management (GIM) is used to refer to PIM as it functions in more public spheres. GIM helps in sharing personal information with a group, emphasizing the norms that underlie that sharing and the ways participants negotiate these norms in response to the tensions. GIM includes email, Webpages, wikis and online calendaring. GIM can provide a forum for consolidating social, legal and business issues emerging in a number of domains.||0||0|

The site has become the world’s single largest encyclopedia as well as one of the world's most diverse online communities. Because of these factors, the site provides a unique view into the processes of collaborative work and the factors that go into producing encyclopedic content. To date, there has been no unified review of the current research that is taking place on and about Wikipedia, and indeed there have been few formal studies of the site, despite its growing importance. This project is a review of social science and information science studies of the site, focusing on research methods and categorizing the areas of the site that have been studied so far. Studies of Wikipedia have focused primarily on the social dynamics of contributors (such as how disputes are resolved and why contributors participate), and the content of Wikipedia (such as whether it is an accurate source), but due to the unique collaborative processes on Wikipedia these two areas are deeply intertwined.||17||1|

Everyone can directly edit articles and every edit is recorded. The version history of all articles is freely available and allows a multitude of examinations. This paper gives an overview on Wikipedia research. Wikipedia's fundamental components, i.e. articles, authors, edits, and links, as well as content and quality are analysed. Possibilities of research are explored including examples and first results. Several characteristics that are found in Wikipedia, such as exponential growth and scale-free networks are already known in other context. However the Wiki architecture also possesses some intrinsic specialties. General trends are measured that are typical for all Wikipedias but vary between languages in detail.||12||16|

Scientific, technological, and medical journals are the first publications to be completely transformed from print to digital format but monographs are beginning to appear in digital format as well and soon all communication and publishing of scientific information will be entirely electronic. In fact, this change is affecting all components of the scientific enterprise, from personal correspondence and laboratory methods to peer reviewing and the quality assessment of scientific research. Along with these radical and rapid changes in information presentation and distribution are coincident changes in the expectations of both the public and other scientists, with both groups demanding ever more rapid, open, and global access to scientific information than has been available in the past. The consequence of this revolution in the mechanics of communications technology is threatening the very existence of a number of highly regarded institutions such as intellectual property, commercial publishers, scientific societies, and academic libraries and might soon begin to threaten even the traditional university.
